Communication between patients and caregivers is critically important to diagnosing and providing quality care. But is effective communication possible with people who have hearing problems? The answer is no, especially when a caregiver is wearing a mask that prevents lip reading. Our client found a solution to this issue — a smart badge technology converting speech to text in real time and displaying it just like closed captions, and entrusted our team to create a robust and secure software infrastructure to bring this idea to life.

Business Needs
Every day, people with hearing issues face barriers and challenges that lead to miscommunication. The problem gets even more serious in medical settings, where healthcare providers usually wear face coverings that make lip reading impossible.
Our client, an electronics manufacturer Satellite Displays, was looking for a solution that would help improve the quality of life for millions of people with hearing issues around the globe. They designed Badger, a smart badge that was supposed to display words transmitted from voice in real time. However, their hands-free communication device needed reliable software to run on, which is what Satellite Displays turned to us for.
They needed an application to enable their smart badge to capture the voice of a person wearing it and transmit the recording to a connected smartphone. Then, the smartphone would convert audio to text and transmit it back to Badger.
We support. We improve.
We conducted a discovery phase, which allowed us to better understand the client’s expectations for the project and define clear requirements. Besides enabling the mentioned function — converting voice into text and transmitting it to the smart badge — there were some other important points we had to take into account.
First of all, it was crucial that the application ensure a smooth connection between the badge and a smartphone without any disruptions or disconnects. Secondly, the smart badge technology had to support the integration across various operating systems and smartphone models. Also, we were requested to design a simple and user-friendly interface and integrate voice commands for device control.
