Business Needs

Challenge

Enterprises handle massive amounts of data, and it’s critical that employees have access to necessary data when they need it. Our client was struggling with the inefficiency of their existing method of retrieving corporate information, which involved a series of manual steps. Moreover, the enterprise data was spread throughout multiple systems, making it difficult to gain an overall view of certain data types.

Inconsistent access to data across the organization and multiple technologies housing various types of information significantly complicated the reporting process. Actually, the only way to generate reports was by doing it manually.

We support. We improve.

Solution

Having analyzed the specific needs and requirements of the business, we came to a conclusion that an enterprise data mart solution would best meet them.

A data mart is a subset of a data warehouse used to retrieve client-facing data. It’s normally oriented to a specific business line or team. While data warehouses have an enterprise-wide depth, the information in data marts applies to a single department.

We utilized existing data sources to create a new data mart centered on equipment. This helped save costs as it did not involve additional data collection efforts.

This is the first of the several data marts planned. While developing this enterprise data automation solution, we used various Microsoft tools, including MS SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and others:

  • MS SQL Server is a relational database management system for storing and retrieving data.
  • SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) enables building data integration and workflow applications and is used for tasks like data migration, data warehousing, and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) is a server-based reporting platform that allows users to generate and manage a variety of reports.

As mentioned, this is only the first of several data marts to be developed to facilitate data process automation within the enterprise. This data mart is centered on data related to equipment.

All the equipment-related data has been aggregated into a central database, which is used to build queries and reports. This new approach to data retrieval and reporting substantially streamlines business processes. Business analysts can easily access and provide accurate, up-to-date information concerning equipment. Accurate reports enabled by the enterprise data mart include but are not limited to information related to equipment sales, location, and status.
